What is a phone farm?

Ten phones standing in a row in one long stand, one of their screens lit
The short version

A phone farm is a group of smartphones run together from one place, usually by software on a computer. One person can then manage many phones at once. Some farms test apps or post their owner's own videos. Others fake likes, views and installs, which gave the name its bad reputation.

  • Common kinds: boxes of bare Android boards, racks of phones, cloud phones, test device farms and real iPhones.
  • The honest uses: testing apps on real devices, and posting your own videos to your own accounts.
  • TikTok and YouTube ban fake engagement. A 2024 US FTC rule bans trading fake followers or views for commercial ends.

What does phone farm mean?

Phone farm is a loose name for many phones working side by side. Farm means what it means in server farm: many identical units doing the same job.

The term has three common senses. They overlap, which is why the same phrase can sound harmless or shady.

  • Reward app farming. In the late 2010s, phone farming meant running ad-watching reward apps on many phones for points and gift cards. When Vice tested it in 2019, four phones earned 50 cents in a week.
  • Fake engagement. Farms that produce likes, views, follows, app installs and ad clicks for pay.
  • Device fleets for real work. Phones used to test apps, or to post a business's own videos to its own accounts every day.

This guide covers the last two, and the rules that separate them.

What kinds of phone farms are there?

A mobile phone farm can be built from very different hardware. These are five kinds you will meet.

KindWhat it isCommon use
Box phone farmBare Android phone boards, screens and batteries removed, 20 to more than 40 in one caseMany accounts at once, often fake engagement
Rack of Android phonesWhole Android phones on shelves or standsTesting, posting, reward apps
Cloud or emulated phonesVirtual Android phones on a server or a computer, with no handset at allTesting and remote use
Test device farmReal phones and tablets in a data center, rented by app developersApp testing
iPhone phone farmWhole, real iPhones running the official apps, one account per phonePosting your own content

What is phone farming used for?

The hardware matters less than the job. The same rack of phones can do honest work or fraud.

  • App testing. Developers run their apps on many real devices to catch bugs before release. AWS Device Farm, for example, hosts real phones and tablets for app testing.
  • Posting to many accounts. Brands, app makers and agencies post their own videos to several accounts, each on its own phone.
  • Fake engagement and ad fraud. Selling views, likes, follows and app installs, or clicking ads so advertisers pay for attention that never happened.

The last use is why phone farms have a bad reputation. Fraud Blocker, a company that tracks click fraud, visited box farms in Vietnam in 2026. It found them boosting views and likes, running ad fraud and pushing political content.

A click farm fakes the signals that viewers and advertisers rely on. A farm that posts its owner's own videos adds real content instead. The difference is the subject of phone farm vs click farm.

Are phone farms allowed on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube?

No platform bans owning phones. What the platforms ban is what a farm does with them, and those rules are strict.

  • TikTok does not allow accounts that mislead or manipulate the platform, or the trade of services that artificially boost engagement. Its Integrity and Authenticity guidelines give selling followers or likes as an example.
  • YouTube does not allow anything that artificially increases views, likes, comments or other metrics, including through automatic systems. See its fake engagement policy.
  • Instagram's Terms of Use bar creating accounts or collecting information in an automated way without its express permission.

Outside the platforms, the US Federal Trade Commission finalized a rule against fake reviews in August 2024. It also bans buying or selling fake social media influence, such as bot followers or views, for a commercial purpose.

Following every rule still promises nothing. Any platform can limit or remove any account. For the legal side in more depth, read is phone farming legal?.

Android phone farm or iPhone phone farm?

Many cell phone farms run Android, because secondhand Android phones are cheap. Fraud Blocker's 2026 reports describe box farms built from older or broken phones, often running a modified system.

An iPhone phone farm uses whole, real iPhones. Each account runs in the official app on its own iPhone. It costs more up front.

Prices vary widely by kind and size. Our line-by-line breakdown is in how much does a phone farm cost?.

How Tiktok Farm builds an iPhone phone farm

Tiktok Farm builds phone farms for real iPhones. They warm up your accounts and post your own videos to TikTok, Instagram and YouTube on a schedule.

Each phone runs the official apps, with one account per phone. We build the hardware that holds them: the dock or the racks, the cooling, the cabling. The Farm Software on your computer shows every phone on one screen.

  • Limited Station: 10 phones, $10,000.
  • Big Farm: 20 to 120 phone slots, from $20,000.
  • Farm Software license: $5,000 a year, needed to run a setup.

You bring the computer, the iPhones and a Wi-Fi network, and you own the hardware. It is not a view bot: it buys no views, likes or followers. See the hardware or the prices.

Questions

What is phone farming?

Phone farming means running many phones together from one place to do the same tasks. It covers app testing, posting to many accounts, old reward app setups, and fake engagement, which TikTok and YouTube ban.

Is a phone farm the same as a click farm?

No. A click farm sells fake views, likes, follows or clicks. A phone farm is only the hardware. It can post its owner's own videos, or it can be used as a click farm.

Is phone farming legal?

Owning phones is legal in most places. Buying or selling fake engagement breaks the platforms' rules. It can also break consumer protection law, such as a 2024 US FTC rule. This is not legal advice.

Can you still make money with reward app phone farming?

Not much, going by Vice's 2019 test: four phones earned 50 cents in a week. A farmer it interviewed described a sharp fall in earnings in 2018.

Can a phone farm use iPhones?

Yes. An iPhone phone farm runs whole, real iPhones with the official apps, usually one account per phone. It costs more up front than a box of Android boards.
