The best time to post on Instagram
The best time to post on Instagram is when your own followers are most active, which Instagram's insights show you. As a starting point, Buffer's 2026 study ranks Thursday at 9 a.m. and Wednesday at noon highest. Sprout Social's 2026 data favors Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons.
- Buffer, 2026 (9.6 million posts): Thursday 9 a.m., Wednesday 12 p.m., Wednesday 6 p.m.
- Sprout Social, 2026: Monday 2 to 4 p.m., Tuesday 1 to 7 p.m., Wednesday 12 to 9 p.m.
- Buffer, 2025: the most consistent posters got 5 times more engagement per post

What is the best time to post on Instagram in 2026?
Three large studies, all published or updated in 2026, answer the question, and they do not agree. All three give times in the audience's local time, so 9 a.m. means 9 a.m. where your followers live.
| Study | What it looked at | Best times (local) |
|---|---|---|
| Buffer, September 2026 | 9.6 million posts, January 2024 to December 2025 | Thursday 9 a.m., Wednesday 12 p.m., Wednesday 6 p.m. |
| Sprout Social, March 2026 | About 2 billion engagements across 307,000 profiles, November 2025 to February 2026 | Monday 2 to 4 p.m., Tuesday 1 to 7 p.m., Wednesday 12 to 9 p.m. |
| Later, updated April 2026 | Over 6 million posts, January to October 2024 | 5 a.m., with Monday the best day |
Two of the three point to the middle of the week. Buffer names Wednesday the best single day, and Sprout Social says Tuesdays and Wednesdays show the highest peaks. Later stands apart: its best hour is 5 a.m. and its best day Monday. Posts from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. did better than average.
On the weak days there is more agreement. Buffer found Friday and Saturday the weakest, and Sprout Social found weekends lowest overall. If you take one rule from them, take this: both rank Saturday among the weakest days.
Why do the studies give different answers?
Each study draws on a different set of accounts, measures success in its own way and covers a different stretch of time. Buffer uses the median engagement rate: likes, comments, shares and saves divided by followers. Later's data is from 2024; Buffer's runs through 2025.
An average across hundreds of thousands of accounts mixes bakeries, banks, gamers and news pages. Their followers wake, work and scroll at different hours. Your audience is one small slice of that average, and it may not look like the whole.
These studies show when posts did well on average. They do not show when your followers are online. Use them to pick your first test slots, then switch to your own data.
How to find your followers' most active times on Instagram
Instagram's own insights answer the question for your account. Instagram's help center notes that some follower insights only appear once an account has at least 100 followers.
- Open your profile and tap Insights or your professional dashboard.
- Open the breakdown of your total followers.
- Scroll to Most active times.
- Note the two or three hours where activity peaks on most days.
Labels change between app versions. If a step looks different, Instagram's help page on insights has the current path.
Then test. Post in the hour before a peak, so the post is fresh when most followers open the app. Move one post a week to a different slot and keep everything else the same. After three or four weeks, compare each post's reach in its insights.
Best time to post Reels, carousels and Stories
Buffer's 2026 guide sends Reels to the evening, 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., with Wednesday and Thursday the strongest days. It puts carousels in the same midweek slots as its overall best times.
Later's study, updated in 2026, puts Reels later still. Its best Reels time is 12 a.m., Monday is its best Reels day, and engagement ran high from 12 a.m. to 6 a.m. Both studies put Reels late: Buffer in the evening, Later after midnight.
Stories mostly reach people who already follow you, so your Most active times chart is the best guide there.
Does the time zone matter?
Yes. Every study above reports local time: the clock of the people you want to reach, not yours.
- If most followers live in one country, post by their clock, even if you work from somewhere else.
- If you manage an account for a client abroad, read its insights in the client's hours before you plan the week.
How often should you post on Instagram?
Buffer's 2025 frequency study covered over 2 million posts from more than 100,000 Instagram accounts. Reach per post rose most when accounts went from 1 or 2 posts a week to 3 to 5. Its advice is 3 to 5 posts a week.
Keeping it up matters too. Buffer's 2025 consistency study followed over 100,000 users on 10 networks for 26 weeks. Users who posted in 20 or more weeks got 5 times more engagement per post than those who posted in 4 or fewer.
None of these studies weighs the habit against the hour. The practical answer is still to pick good hours and keep to them. Why steady organic posting adds up over time is in organic reach vs paid ads.
Posting at the right hour on more than one account
One account is easy to post on time. Ten are not, especially when each has its own niche and its own audience hours. This is the problem Tiktok Farm is built for.
We build phone farms of real iPhones, each running the official apps with one account per phone. The Farm Software puts every phone on one screen with a posting calendar. Each account posts your own videos at its audience's hours, every day. It posts to TikTok, Instagram and YouTube; the same habit on TikTok is in the best time to post on TikTok.
It buys no views, likes or followers, and no schedule promises reach. Instagram can limit or remove any account, and its rules apply to every post, however it is scheduled.
What is the best day to post on Instagram?
Midweek, according to two large 2026 studies: Buffer found Wednesday best, and Sprout Social found Tuesday and Wednesday strongest. Later's study, updated in 2026 on 2024 data, found Monday best. Your own Most active times chart decides it for your account.
What is the worst day to post on Instagram?
Buffer's 2026 study found Friday and Saturday the weakest days, and Sprout Social's 2026 data found weekends lowest overall. Beyond the studies, the worst time for you is any hour when your followers are asleep.
Is it bad to post Reels on Instagram at night?
Not according to two studies. Buffer's 2026 guide points Reels to 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Later's study, updated in 2026, found its best Reels time at 12 a.m.
How often should you post on Instagram?
Buffer's 2025 study of over 2 million Instagram posts recommends 3 to 5 posts a week, where reach per post rose most. Posting more helped too, with smaller gains each step.
How do I see when my Instagram followers are online?
Open Insights from your profile, go to your total followers, and scroll to Most active times. Labels change between app versions, and Instagram's help center notes that some follower insights need at least 100 followers.
