YouTube Shorts monetization: how Shorts pay

The short version

YouTube Shorts monetization runs through the YouTube Partner Program, where channels share in the ad revenue from the Shorts feed. The full tier needs 1,000 subscribers and 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days, and creators keep 45% of the revenue allocated to them. A lower tier, at 500 subscribers and 3 million Shorts views, opens fan funding and Shopping.

  • From February 1, 2027, new applicants need 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days, or 8,000 watch hours (announced August 10, 2026).
  • From the same date, every channel needs 10 million qualified Shorts views in a rolling 90 days to earn from the Shorts creator pool.
  • Only original Shorts earn: unedited clips, reuploads and compilations with nothing added are left out of revenue sharing.

How does YouTube Shorts monetization work?

Shorts earn in two ways: a share of the ads shown between videos in the Shorts feed, and money from fans and sales. Both sit inside the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), and each has its own entry bar.

The other way does not depend on ads: channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, Super Thanks and YouTube Shopping. These open at a lower tier. TikTok pays on a different model, covered in the Creator Rewards Program guide.

What are the YouTube Shorts monetization requirements?

Both tiers ask the same basics:

  • live in a country or region where the program is available;
  • follow YouTube's channel monetization policies;
  • have no active Community Guidelines strikes;
  • turn on 2-Step Verification for your Google Account;
  • have advanced features access;
  • link one AdSense for YouTube account.

Each tier also has a long video route: 3,000 watch hours in 12 months for the lower tier and 4,000 for the full one. A channel that posts both formats can qualify either way.

The lower tier has been rolling out country by country, so check what YouTube Studio offers your channel.

YouTube may turn off monetization on a channel that has not uploaded a video or made a post for six months or more.

What changes for Shorts monetization in 2027?

On August 10, 2026, YouTube announced two Partner Program changes that take effect on February 1, 2027. PPC Land and The Next Web reported the details:

  • A higher bar for new applicants. First time applicants need 1,000 subscribers plus either 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days or 8,000 watch hours in 12 months. Channels already in the program keep their place.
  • A rolling bar for Shorts pay. Every channel needs 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days to earn from the Shorts creator pool, checked each month.

A channel below the rolling bar stays in the program. Only its Shorts pool earnings stop until it is back over 10 million. Long video ads, fan funding and Shopping carry on.

The lower tier for fan funding and Shopping is unchanged. So from 2027, pool money goes only to channels that keep their audience, not to ones that crossed the bar once.

How much does YouTube pay for Shorts?

There is no fixed rate per view. YouTube works out Shorts pay each month in four steps:

  1. It adds up the revenue from ads that run between videos in the Shorts feed.
  2. It splits that revenue between a creator pool and music licensing, by views and the music used.
  3. It shares the creator pool among monetizing creators by their share of total Shorts views in each country.
  4. You keep 45% of the revenue allocated to you, whether or not your Shorts use music.

Music changes the size of the pool, not your cut. A Short with no music sends all of the revenue tied to its views into the creator pool. With music, YouTube splits it between the pool and the music partners by the number of tracks used.

Because the pool is shared country by country, two channels with the same views can earn different amounts. Long videos pay creators 55% of their ad revenue, so the formats do not compare view for view. Per view figures quoted online are estimates; plan with your own YouTube Analytics.

Which Shorts views count for monetization?

Since March 31, 2025, YouTube counts a Short's view as soon as it starts to play or replays, with no minimum watch time. The older measure is now called engaged views. PPC Land reported YouTube saying the change would not affect earnings or Partner Program eligibility.

Not every view earns, either. YouTube leaves these out of Shorts revenue sharing:

  • views of non-original Shorts, such as unedited clips of movies or TV shows, reuploads of other creators' content, and compilations with no original content added;
  • views of Shorts that do not follow YouTube's advertiser-friendly guidelines;
  • views from before you accepted the Shorts Monetization Module in the program's terms.

Every example is content with nothing of the uploader's own in it. Your own edit, commentary and point of view are what you add, and you still need the rights to what you use. Both decide whether a clipping agency can earn from Shorts.

How to get more views on YouTube Shorts

Views drive every number above, and what grows them is steady work:

  • Win the first second. Open on the payoff, the question or the action, never a logo or a greeting.
  • Make it loop. A tight edit that ends where it began invites a replay, and replays now add to the view count.
  • One idea per Short. A clear topic helps the right viewers find it and tells them why to stay.
  • Write titles people search. Name the topic in plain words, so the Short can be found in search as well as the feed.
  • Use length on purpose. Since October 2024, Shorts can run up to three minutes, but a longer Short must hold attention longer.
  • Read your analytics. A large gap between views and engaged views suggests many viewers swipe away early. Make more of the Shorts that hold them.
  • Post on a schedule. Steady posting gives your channel more chances to reach new viewers. Pick a pace you can keep.

Skip paid view services: they bring the wrong audience and put the channel at risk.

Shorts monetization on more than one channel

YouTube checks every threshold per channel, so each channel reaches its subscribers and Shorts views on its own. From February 2027, each must also hold 10 million every 90 days to earn from the pool.

One Short copied to five channels is not five chances, and YouTube's channel monetization policies apply to each of them. Give each channel its own niche and its own videos.

Posting every day on several channels is what Tiktok Farm is built for. We build phone farms of real iPhones, each running the official apps with one account per phone. They post your own videos to TikTok, Instagram and YouTube on a schedule. It buys no views and fakes no engagement, so every view still has to come from a real viewer. Reaching any threshold is not promised, and YouTube can limit or remove any account.

Questions

How many views do you need to monetize YouTube Shorts?

For Shorts ad revenue, 1,000 subscribers and 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. YouTube announced in August 2026 that from February 1, 2027, new applicants need 20 million. From then, every channel also needs 10 million in a rolling 90 days to keep earning from the creator pool.

How much does YouTube pay per 1,000 Shorts views?

There is no fixed rate. YouTube pools Shorts ad revenue monthly and shares it by each channel's share of views in each country. Creators keep 45% of what is allocated to them.

Do all YouTube Shorts views count toward monetization?

No. Since March 2025 the view count includes every play and replay, but YouTube said the change would not affect earnings or eligibility. Views of non-original or advertiser-unfriendly Shorts are also left out of revenue sharing.

Can you monetize Shorts with 500 subscribers?

Partly. The expanded program asks for 500 subscribers, 3 public uploads and 3 million Shorts views in 90 days. It opens fan funding and Shopping where available, but Shorts ad revenue needs the full tier.

Can you monetize Shorts made from other people's videos?

Only when the Short is original: YouTube excludes unedited clips, reuploads of other creators' content and compilations with nothing added. You also need the rights to what you use.
